Students are back…
Ahh end of August and I see family cars loaded up with duvets, pillows and toasters all along Cavendish St/Stretford Rd with a variety of trepidation, smiling mums staring lovingly at their offspring and varying degrees of lostness…ah how lovely a scene and then wandered round a corner and BAM it hit me…the club placards…Now I’d bumped up against these things previously because of my placement here in town, the guys making them blocked the street so badly and for so long the council turned up, so cheers to you guys…
Shall we take a little closer look at them, they all seem to have the same mix of garishness graphics, swirling backgrounds and offers (cheap drinks are still there, H and Jack make an appearance, the girls look dressed up and ready to slay, make up on point and looking great, while the boys look like they’ve come out on a random or straight from the gym by the way they are dressed, too casual, too generic and too boring (‘Ello) and there are looootttsss of faux gang signs communicating something? Faux thuggish behaviour perhaps?
The photography has the same black background pap style flash and quite close up, there is no room for full lengths and or lighting effects, no that’s saved for the graphic designers (!) the people look great enough and happy enough and I’m sure the promoters think they’re representative of who they want to come to the night and what will appeal no doubt, think possibly they all have the same promoter too so hats off to them again. Yes, I know I’m too old for these nights but I did cover ‘em back in the day and I definitely have no club snobbishness, I loved the uncool nights (more than the cool nights if I’m honest.)
My worries are many fold but I do worry that they’re missing the point of clubbing but that is absolutely their prerogatives to do that and party and be who they want to be...enjoy the free hoodies, cheap blue drinks and bumping into whatstherenames and on a Monday/Thursday too..
sbh will be safely tucked up in bed…but will see you on the way to the lecture theatre next day...Anyways…
Had a look through the digital archive and put together a student friendly gallery for sbh images and where you should check out, this one from 10 years ago so enjoy and much love to you students, some of you will end up staying here and making this your home after all once Manchester, always Manchester…
Ciao Bella.
