…fashion photography
All this thinking about where I am etc that’s been happening, and I realise one true thing...
I really miss doing fashion photography.
Now I realise my brand of fashion photography was slightly different, some critiqued it quite heavily, others didn’t go big on understanding my attempts at disconnecting sleazy, as sleazy was the higher end publishing watchword, think that photographer with the glasses, American Apparel and others that the patriarchy shoved into us via their medias that made us believe that. But I did try to do something different by a combination of subjects, ideas, day-time-night-time venues all connecting with the inherent glamour of the model and tried to bring in qualities of the shoot.
My basic premise was to ask people if they’d like to appear in front of the camera, some said yes, some said no, if they said yes then I’d aim to shoot 7/8 set ups (!) around themes that were going to be a regular appearances. Not sure I remember what they were but I’ll see if I can dig them out…

That’s quite a shoot list but felt it worked as it left enough room to create something yet could easily be passed off by many different types of outfits, it also added a semblance of order to the shoots. Yet as ever at that time I was made to feel by certain people at the time that this was a shit idea, possibly a bit wrong sleazy and wtf was I doing this for as it wasn’t very good or had any value….nice hey…
Fast forward 10+ years, better surrounded and the recent reading of a couple of academic papers on fashion photography that it clicked, and I realised what I was trying to do was right. One of the gist’s of the paper was that only photography can preserve fashion and yet the fashion photograph was not easily definable, it’s different from images of people in fashionable clothes yet they play a part but it’s of something more, something beyond…It’s not about just one thing, it’s about the combo of the vibe, the location, the technical, time, settings, the output AND the model and the clothes. Simply put in an sbh stayle, it's a mood.

And that’s what I was trying to do at that time…create content with a mood !!

Then in another moment I realise that I miss creating fashslashportrait stuff so much, I’m thinking of setting something up, so if you’re reading this and would like to create some images, a mood then give me a shout.
